A little about me...

I'm Lea Pierson.  I am in my senior year at AMC, and very excited to be in the home stretch.  I work full-time as a Student Advisor working with adults with Asperger's Syndrome.  I love my job!  I plan to continue my education and receive my Masters in Education and Special Ed. Certification.  When not at work, I spend every minute with my children.  On May 26, 2013, I remarried and am now step-mother to two boys.  My husband and I have six children total and a dog...I guess you can say we're the new "Brady Bunch".  I am very excited to be taking this course.  My oldest son loves photography.  He and I have gone out taking random pictures in various places, so I am looking forward to add to our collection of shots and learn as much as I can on improving my picture taking.  Can't wait to see everyone's work!

My fotothing name is lmpierson

What is due this past week and when?

Hi Everyone,

I check all work for the past week on Monday morning, first thing.  I keep a spreadsheet that logs work completed week by week.  I take attendance for the previous week on Monday morning as well...

For Week 1, I'm asking you to post an introductory hello and photo to the blog, set up your fotothing account and post your screen name here as well.  I can't find you unless you do, even if you friend me.   You also need to post a picture there for me to add you as a friend.

You should have Photoshop installed, be comfortable posting to the blog and to fotothing.  Watch the video on how to edit photos in Photoshop.

For the coming week, I'm looking for a nice selection of well seen and composed photographs from a downtown or built environment.  Watch the video on what works linked in the syllabus under week 2.

Self Portrait

Jose Rodriguez

Hi Everyone, I'm a senior taking photography for the first time and I'm excited about the projects this Mod. It couldn't have come at a better time because I'm expecting a baby next week and it would be a perfect opportunity to take his pictures and do something special with them. ( :  I was messing around with one of the mirrors at work that are hung at the end of hallways so you can see who coming down the corridor. The first picture looks like I'm taking a picture of a video camera taping me. I like the second one because it appears like I'm merging with the mirror. I am looking forward to seeing all the great photos from other students this term. Good Luck !

Oh I almost forgot, my fotothing sign in name is jrod575

Week 1

Good afternoon!

I have been looking through the links you posted for the galleries and I was hoping that my portfolio for this mod could be on landscapes.  I love everything about nature; trees, water, clouds, etc. There were a few artists that caught my eye: Emauel Volakis, Susan Spiritus, Ellen Jantzen, and a few landscapes on HL Photo Gallery (no artist named).

Please tell me what you think and the expectations for number of photos to be uploaded per week, etc.

Looking forward to start clicking :)

Digital Photo II Students!

Please click on the link in the upper right hand corner for your syllabus.  You will post your work here and on fotothing as well.  Think about a project you would like to pursue aided by the many suggestions in the syllabus.  It is very important to work to develop an individual plan for you this week as we don't have much time to waste.  Work with me...We can make this genuine and important.

Digital Photography I students!

Welcome to the Digital Photography online class.  Digital Photography is a natural to offer as an online class because of the ease in creating and posting your work electronically.  I find eLearning to be cumbersome in general and have decided to publish the course syllabus on my own website, http://jnevins.com, and run the entire experience using the web, a blog, and a public hosting site.  eLearning currently does not have the capacity to hold the number of images you’ll be posting as part of this class.

Class runs from August 27th until October 16th. All work needs to be completed by then.

There are four elements we need to juggle in order for this to be a successful experience for everyone...

1.  The class syllabus... here are all the assignments and links to readings that you will need to work through the problems for each week of the class. The syllabus is found with this address:  jnevins.com/digitalphotographysyllabusonline.htm or click here. While you are at it, browse around the rest of my site to get to know me better.  I have posted a portfolio of my photography, links for finding galleries and museums online, my teaching philosophy and more. The assignment for each week is posted on it.  Read it carefully and work to incorporate the main idea into your work that week.

2.  The Class Blog.  This is where we will build a sense of community.  It is important to post examples of your work each week as well as comments about your images to accompany the images posted as well as comment on the work of others in the class... you can ask questions to me personally anytime via email, but here is a public place to offer suggestions, ask questions and just generally where we can create a class environment.  Blogger is very easy to post to...
Your grade is based on your posts to the blog and more importantly your portfolio of photographs, illustrating your understanding and completion of the assignment for each week.

I have added you to the class blog … you need to respond to the link that Blogger.com sent you in order to become a member of the class blog. Once you are a member, you can post there.  I'd prefer to stay in contact with you via regular email. Please email me at jnevins@albertus.edu or  jnevins@jnevins.com. You may call me at home anytime (up until 9 pm)  if you would like to talk personally or to help solve a technical issue that would be harder via email. It is very important to get all technical issues solved and out of the way at the outset, in the first week.

3.  Photoshop CS2... This is available free with a lifetime serial number as Adobe no longer wants to officially "support" it.  You can do everything for class with this version.  http://www.adobe.com/downloads/cs2_downloads/  Be sure to copy the serial number and observe if you are downloading the Windows version or the Mac version. Taking the picture is just the first step!  You need to edit each picture you care about for light, focal point, contrast, color balance, etc.  I have videos linked in the upper right hand side of the blog to show you how.

Me leading a discussion of masters of 20th Century Photography at Yale Art Gallery

4.  Image hosting for your whole portfolio.  My online art classes host their portfolio images at Fotothing.com from the UK.  It makes posting your assignments a snap and we have the ability to form a group or virtual community as "friends", similar to Fotothing.  Join up there then send me your screen name so I can add you as a “friend” ... my screen name is jnevins.  Check out the portfolios of previous Mod students. They are “my friends” to the right of my page. Fotothing.com/jnevins  If you can't figure out how a shot was done, post your question to the blog or email me and I may use it as a post on the blog to the rest of the class. In order for me to add you as a "friend". you need to post a picture to fotothing... any picture will do.

This first week, we must iron out all of the technical issues to be sure that everyone is up to speed.  I have asked for you to post a creative self portrait and to tell us something about yourself.  This is an art course and its primary focus will be on your portfolio as the basis for your assessment.  Study the syllabus to get a sense of what I will be looking for.  Links I have posted to visual images and readings are an important component of the class... I'll be looking at how you are in dialog with the images and ideas linked in the syllabus as a component of your grade.  Also important is that I get a sense of your  spending time at the assignments and are growing in the medium of photography as the course unfolds. Posting your best one or two  images you are creating to the class blog about twice a week is vital to your success in this class.  Use the comment button to respond to your classmates posts.  One of the strong points of using Fotothing is the ability to post comments there as well. The bulk of your work will be posted to fotothing.  I am expecting 7 images per week as the bare minimum… (6 that really fulfill the intent of the assignment and more like 10 would be a better number… this is digital!)

Any comments, suggestions, or observations as to how I can smooth the way for you as we get going will be welcome.  My goal is your success and your feeling that this was well worth your time.

Looking forward to launching this new class!

Best wishes,

Jerry
